Ludovico Einaudi

Browse piano sheets by Ludovico Einaudi on Zen Virtual Piano. Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin on 23 November 1955. His mother was an amateur pianist, and the biography on his website suggests it may have been she who first introduced him to music. He began studying at the Conservatory of Turin and graduated under Azio Corghi at the Conservatory of Milan, then studied with Luciano Berio, becoming his assistant, and with Karlheinz Stockhausen. A path that may have begun with his mother’s music and leads on to study with Berio and Stockhausen suggests a musical education with deep roots and wide horizons. A scholarship in 1982 sent him to the Tanglewood Music Festival, and there he first encountered American minimalism. He spent the next several years composing for ballet, cinema and theatre, including Sul filo d’Orfeo in 1984, Time Out in 1988, The Wild Man in 1991 and Salgari in 1995. Pieces he wrote for orchestra and ensemble were performed at La Scala in Milan, at Ircam in Paris and at Lincoln Center in New York. Years of writing for dancers, actors and film can be read as a long schooling in music that accompanies something else, before the solo albums that followed. Stanze, from 1992, is a collection of sixteen compositions for the harpist Cecilia Chailly. It was with Le Onde (1996), his first solo album, inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel, that he truly caught the piano world’s attention. Eden Roc followed in 1999, with a string quintet and the duduk master Djavan Gasparyan, and I giorni in 2001 is a cycle of ballads for piano inspired by a trip to Mali. From a harp collection to a novel-inspired album to a journey to Mali, the albums seem to follow one curiosity after another rather than a single formula. Elements, released in 2015, was recorded over three months in his home studio in the Langhe countryside. Seven Days Walking emerged from long winter walks in the mountains and is a project of seven records, released monthly from March to October 2019, each a variation around the same imaginary route. In the summer of 2021 he took his music back to nature in eleven concerts held among national parks, nature reserves, creeks, valleys, lakes and mountain meadows reachable only on foot, at dawn, at dusk and under starry skies. A countryside studio, winter walks and concerts reachable on foot suggest a body of work in which place and pace matter nearly as much as notes.
