Once Upon a December was written by Stephen Flaherty, with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, for the 1997 animated film Anastasia. Its catalog artist correctly names the composer and lyricist rather than one of the performers who later recorded the song. The song works in the film as a recurring lullaby and memory motif. Once Upon a December was nominated for a Golden Globe, but Anastasia's 1998 Oscar nomination for Best Original Song went to Journey to the Past. A piano score is therefore an arrangement of a film song, not evidence that the work was originally written for solo piano.
