Liebesträume, S.541 by Franz Liszt

Franz Liszt's Liebesträume is a set of three nocturnes, not one oversized piano miniature. The title gathers three poetic ideas about love, and Liszt published the music in 1850 both as songs with piano and as a solo-piano version. The third nocturne, “O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst!”, became the set's best-known melody. That popularity can make the whole S.541 set seem to belong to No. 3 alone, so the selected catalog entry matters: a score may contain the full set or only one movement. Liszt's piano writing is vocal in origin but pianistic in effect. Let the arrangement decide how much of the original texture remains; do not carry the set's three-movement scope or approximate total duration into a single-movement page without checking the score.
