Csárdás by Vittorio Monti

Vittorio Monti's Csárdás is a rhapsodic concert piece built from the character of the Hungarian csárdás dance. Monti, an Italian composer and violinist, composed it in 1904; it became his best-known work and is often encountered in violin-and-piano, mandolin, orchestral, and other arrangements. The piece moves through contrasting sections, beginning slowly and returning to slower material between faster dance-like passages rather than accelerating without interruption. Listeners often hear it through the lassú and friss vocabulary of the dance tradition, though those terms describe the tradition more than a fixed two-part map of this score. The indexed score is a community arrangement listed for piano and solo violin. It is useful to hear it as a translation of Monti's concert piece, not as evidence that Csárdás is an anonymous Hungarian folk song; the composition is Monti's, even though it draws on a dance tradition.
