A homemade clip shows Yung Lean smoking in the snow and drawling lazily in AutoTune over a trap beat; he started uploading videos in February 2013. The Guardian says many viewers wondered at the time whether the whole thing was an elaborate parody. A snowy setting, AutoTune and a trap beat hint at an image built from contrasting parts. Håstad, the artist known as Yung Lean, spent his early childhood in Belarus, where his mother moved the family partly so he could have a childhood like her own. Back in Sweden the family settled in Stockholm when he was between three and five years old; sixth to tenth grade was spent at UNIS Hanoi. In an interview with Complex, Yung Lean attributes his earliest creative encouragement to a great uncle who urged him to make things with his hands and let his imagination run, while parents who were not artists themselves gave Håstad room to explore. A childhood across Belarus, Sweden and Hanoi hints at a background shaped by several countries rather than one place. Early encouragement from a great uncle, beside a homemade clip, hints at a thread from hands-on making to a public persona. By 2012 Yung Gud and Yung Sherman were producing and mixing, while Håstad wrote lyrics and recorded vocals in a makeshift studio in his basement, and the three formed the Sad Boys collective that year. Yung Lean overdosed on April 7, 2015, and was taken to hospital in Miami; this coincided with the death of his manager and close friend Barron Machat. A basement studio by 2012 and a collective formed with two producers hint at a small, collaborative circle around the recordings. Stranger, his third studio album, arrived on November 10, 2017, through the Stockholm label YEAR0001, with Gud as executive producer and extra production by Whitearmor and Yung Sherman. Its singles included Red Bottom Sky, Hunting My Own Skin and Skimask. Yung Lean said he had cut ties with YEAR0001 and that future music and products would appear through his own label, World Affairs. He has hobbies including reading, ceramics, painting, writing and playing piano. In 2019 the University Philosophical Society at Trinity College, Dublin, gave him the Bram Stoker Medal of Cultural Achievement. A makeshift basement studio and later a Bram Stoker Medal hint at a path from home recording to formal recognition.
