Yoko Kanno

Browse piano sheets by Yoko Kanno on Zen Virtual Piano. Yoko Kanno is a keyboardist and the frontwoman for Seatbelts, a group that performs many of her compositions. Kanno recalls that at age two she visited a relative's house, where an upright piano made her inseparable from it even though she had trouble reaching the keys. Her father taught Japanese, her mother was a nurse, and she has an older brother who learned electrical engineering. Kanno says her first musical memories are of hymns in church, and at her Catholic kindergarten she played the organ herself because the teacher was not very good at it. After joining a club, she found that its senior members had no classical musical background and could not come up with scores for the songs they wanted to copy, while she could. The organ she played in kindergarten and the scores she wrote for the club may suggest that her skills were put to use by the people around her. Seeing drums played live let her experience a beat for the first time, and she then took heavy interest in music that was not classical and joined the band elective. Set beside the drums she saw played live, the upright piano she could not leave alone at age two shows keyboards and rhythm both figuring in her own accounts of music. At a contest where Akutagawa was one of the judges, he told her, "You don't have to do that, create what you like." Kanno thinks the job on Nobunaga's Ambition came her way because Koei, still a small company then, had heard she could write songs quickly. She guesses that Watanabe listened to the music she had written while he was doing the remaining episodes, and she says it was almost as if he made music videos around her music. Kanno says she never cares about genre and cares about the emotions and feelings each scene tries to deliver. Does her care for the emotions of each scene, beside her sense that Watanabe made music videos around her music, point to a close fit between sound and picture?
