Yasushi Ishii

Browse piano sheets by Yasushi Ishii on Zen Virtual Piano. Yasushi Ishii began his career as a composer and musician after he passed an audition run by Epic Sony in 1991. He went on to provide songs and production for artists such as Misato Watanabe, Lazy Knack and Crystal Kay, and to make many commercial jingles and image songs. At one stage he changed how he writes his given name, from 恭史 to 妥師, although the pronunciation stayed the same. A career that began with an Epic Sony audition and includes the 2001 Hellsing score may suggest work that ranges from songs for other artists to anime scores. He also took part in albums and tours by Takashi Utsunomiya of TM Network, and most tracks on Utsunomiya's 1994 second solo album Water Dance, released as T.UTU, were co-composed by the two. The pair then formed the rock unit BOYO-BOZO and in 1995 released two singles, a mini-album and a live video. Joint work on a 1994 album and the 1995 BOYO-BOZO releases may hint at a close working partnership with Utsunomiya. His anime scores include the 2001 TV series Hellsing and, in 2009 and 2010, DARKER THAN BLACK -流星の双子- and DARKER THAN BLACK 黒の契約者外伝. A Gnosisonic review says he created what amounts to a vampire gothic concept album of blues, jazz, rock and noise, with gloomy atmospherics, ramshackle rhythm sections and irresistible melodies. Of the track Ambiguous Drum's Grief, the same review says it starts out sounding like an on-edge theme from a 70s spy movie, with a flickering synthesizer circling jangly guitar until clear piano breaks through and builds to a shimmering chorus. A review that hears rock and noise in his music, beside a rock unit formed with Utsunomiya in 1995, may suggest that rock ran through more than one part of his work. Japanese coverage of the Hellsing soundtrack notes that, at the time of writing, he had been posting new original songs on his own blog since 2007 at a pace of several a month, all free to download, and that some are remakes of Hellsing pieces. In his own account, simply following a director's instructions and delivering exactly what was requested holds little interest for him. He says he aims to bring as much of his own essence and philosophy as possible to every product. He has said he has mastered many instruments through his work, which required music ranging from jazz to rock. Songs posted on his blog since 2007, beside the 2001 Hellsing score and his anime works of 2009 and 2010, may suggest that anime work was one strand among several in his output.
