Yann Tiersen

Browse piano sheets by Yann Tiersen on Zen Virtual Piano. Yann Tiersen is the author, composer and performer of the solo piano piece “Comptine d'un autre été : L'Après-midi”. Tiersen was born in 1970 in Brest, in the department of Finistère, part of Brittany in northwestern France. Piano lessons began for him at four and violin at six, and several musical academies gave him classical training, among them those in Rennes, Nantes, and Boulogne-sur-Mer. The violin begun at six and the electric guitar bought at 13 may suggest changing instruments in Tiersen's early years. When Tiersen was 13, he broke his violin, bought an electric guitar, and formed a rock band. Alone in his apartment in the summer of 1993, Tiersen recorded music on his own with an electric guitar, a violin and a piano accordion, guided by what he calls “a musical anarchic vision”. The electric guitar bought at 13 and the electric guitar in his 1993 apartment may point to the electric guitar appearing at two points in Tiersen's story. Tiersen says that after getting into sampling noises he thought it would be really weird to use toy pianos and accordion with that kind of music, and “that's how I found my way back to acoustic instruments”. The toy pianos and accordion of the sampling phase and the piano accordion of 1993 may hint at the accordion appearing at more than one stage. Le Phare (The Lighthouse), his third album, was released in 1998 and earned Tiersen his first gold record. That same year he performed at the Rencontres Trans Musicales festival in Rennes, and he went on to an extensive and ongoing tour. A film soundtrack draws on Tiersen's first three albums and adds new pieces, variants of which appear on his fourth album, L'Absente, written at the same time. Tiersen received the César Award for Best Music Written for a Film and the World Soundtrack Academy award. Studio albums and touring are where his attention goes, and film makers often take those albums for soundtracks. Tiersen says of himself, “I'm not a composer and I really don't have a classical background”. The César he received for film music and his statement that he is not a composer may point to a gap between how his work is used and how Tiersen describes himself.
