They appeared in a production of Grease with classmates Derrick Lacey, Graham Keighron and Michael Garret, and Egan had earlier played in the punk outfit Skrod. Through the efforts of Filan’s mother, Mae, a group called IOU reached the attention of Boyzone manager Louis Walsh, who in turn contacted Simon Cowell, then in A&R at BMG Records. A school musical, a mother’s effort and a manager’s contact with a record company can be read as a start that owed as much to the people around it as to the singers. Having found success in Britain, Westlife turned to the United States, where Swear It Again reached number two on the Billboard sales chart. In September 2000 they teamed up with Mariah Carey for Against All Odds, which, like the group’s earlier singles, hit number one in the United Kingdom. Feehily told The Guardian that everyone knows the style: “A piano intro, Shane starts the song, the drum beat kicks in for the second verse”, followed by a key change, a gospel choir and some ad-libs. A band whose own member can sum up the formula in a sentence suggests an act that knew its sound and what listeners expected from it. On 9 March 2004 Bryan McFadden announced that he was leaving the band, saying he wanted to spend more time with his wife and their two young children. The rest of the group continued as a four, before announcing their amicable split in October 2011. Shane Filan released his first solo single, Everything to Me, and the album You & Me, which kept him in the Irish and UK Top Ten; Right Here followed in 2015 on East West Records, and he published the autobiography My Side of Life. Four members carrying on after a departure, and a singer with solo releases of his own, can be read as a group that found ways to keep making music in different shapes. In 2018 it emerged that the band were planning a reunion, although Bryan McFadden would not be involved. Hello My Love came out at the start of 2019 to critical acclaim and was certified gold in the UK seven months later. The band released their 11th studio album, Spectrum, later in the year before setting off on a global tour. A reunion led by a single that went gold within months leaves the impression that an audience was still waiting for the band.
