Taghiyev in 1908, Uzeyir Hajibeyov founded the art of opera not only in Azerbaijan but also in the Muslim East. A single staging gives that date a particular weight in the history of music in the region. Hajibeyov was born in Agjabedi village of Shusha on 18 September 1885, and his childhood and youth passed in Shusha, where he received his initial education. His uncle Aghalar Bey Aliverdibeyov, a renowned expert in folk music, was his first music instructor. A boy with a folk-music uncle and a seminary education had the two halves of his later fusion in front of him early. From 1899 to 1904 he studied at the Gori Pedagogical Seminary, where he mastered the works of the European musical classics, learned to play the violin and a brass instrument and made notes of folk songs. After graduating from the seminary in 1904, he was appointed teacher in the Hadrut village of the Jabrayil region, where he taught Russian language, arithmetic, history and music. A schoolteacher who taught music alongside arithmetic and history suggests that his later work as an educator began early. He enriched Azerbaijani national music, which existed as an oral folk art until the early 19th century, with the achievements, forms and genres of Western European and Russian composition schools, creating an organic unity of Eastern and Western musical systems in his operas and comedies and in his other musical works. Music that began as an oral folk art and reached the opera stage can be read as a bridge between an oral folk musical art and Western stage forms. On 30 April 1937 the Azerbaijani State Opera and Ballet Theater staged his opera Koroglu for the first time. A staging in 1937 shows his work for the opera stage continuing well after Leyli and Majnun. He was named Honored Artist of Azerbaijan in 1935, People’s Artist of the USSR in 1938 and a Stalin Prize laureate in 1941, and he became an academician of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences in 1945. Titles from Honored Artist to academician show how the recognition he received widened over the years. He was chairman of the Azerbaijan Composers’ Union from 1938 to 1948, rector of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory in 1928–1929 and 1939–1948, and the author of the anthem of both the Azerbaijan SSR and the Republic of Azerbaijan; the Republic of Azerbaijan anthem has lyrics by Ahmad Javad.
