When he was seven, Okonma pulled covers from CD cases and made covers of his own for imaginary albums, down to a tracklist with song lengths. In his 12 years of schooling, Okonma attended 12 different schools in the Los Angeles and Sacramento areas. A boy designing covers for albums that did not yet exist can be read as an artist imagining the whole package before the music. Tyler co-founded the alternative hip-hop collective Odd Future. After releasing his third studio album, Wolf (2013), Tyler moved away from horrorcore. Under the pseudonym Wolf Haley, he has directed all of his music and promotional videos. An artist who directs his own videos under a second name can be read as keeping tight control of how his work looks. Tyler has won three Grammy Awards and three BET Hip Hop Awards. He has said, “It sucks that whenever we, and I mean guys that look like me, do anything that’s genre-bending or that’s anything they always put it in a rap or urban category. I don’t like that ‘urban’ word.” Okonma has been a skateboarder since 2002 and collects BMX bicycles.
