Tyler Joseph, who formed Twenty One Pilots, grew up outside Columbus with two brothers and a sister, and stumbled into music almost by accident. Both Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, the band's drummer, were raised in conservative, religious households; Joseph was home-schooled by his mother before attending a Christian high school where his father was principal. Playing along with Beatles and Dion songs on the radio, Joseph picked up piano by himself, quickly enough to impress friends, and with two friends he started an early version of Twenty One Pilots. A self-taught pianist forming a band with friends hints at how informal the project's start was. The band was formed in 2009 by Joseph, bassist Nick Thomas and drummer Chris Salih. Work took Salih away on May 8, 2011, and school took Thomas away on June 3. In 2010 Dun was in the audience at the Newport for a show by an earlier incarnation of the band and was blown away by Joseph; Dun and Joseph became close friends, bonding over similar childhoods, eclectic musical taste and ambition, and Dun says they realized how much their goals and philosophies aligned. Joseph forming an early version of the band with two friends, and Thomas and Salih later leaving, may suggest that the group's membership shifted more than once before it became a duo. Joseph teaching himself piano, and a duo sound that includes piano pop, may point to a link between his early playing and the band's style. As a duo they took in reggae, rap, rock and piano pop, and the only genre Dun says they would not touch is southern American country. In April 2012 they announced their signing to Fueled by Ramen, an Atlantic Records subsidiary, during a show. On stage Dun does more than drum nimbly and energetically; he also runs the elaborate backing tracks that fill out their sound. Both musicians growing up in religious households, and southern American country being the one genre Dun says they would not touch, may point to a duo whose tastes are broad but not unlimited. Stressed Out was not meant to be a single but the second song of Blurryface, the one that introduces the album's concept. Joseph says he invented Blurryface as a character standing for a degree of insecurity, and that having symbols and a story gives listeners a reason to take in an entire album rather than one track. Stressed Out earned the duo a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, and the duo's studio albums include Trench (2018), Scaled and Icy (2021), Clancy (2024) and Breach (2025). A taste for reggae, rap, rock and piano pop, and an album built around a character, may suggest a band that mixes styles within one concept. A character used to hold an album together suggests that the duo thinks in whole records more than in single songs.
