In 1962 he joined the Navy, graduated as an officer in the twelfth course, and became deputy commander of the patrol ship Trường Sa. The pen name Trường Sa for his music was chosen around this time. A pen name chosen around the time he served on a patrol ship may point to a link between his naval service and his songwriting. Ninh Bình in 1940 and Ontario from 1991 both appear in his story, which took in more than one place. Between 1965 and 1966 Trường Sa wrote popular songs including Mây trên đỉnh núi, his first composition, Hành trang giã từ, Chuyện người đan áo and Một lần xa bến. He wrote wartime songs of the nhạc vàng style, and with encouragement from the composer Từ Công Phụng he began to write love songs. From 1966 he turned to sad love songs such as Xin còn gọi tên nhau and Rồi mai tôi đưa em. Wartime songs written in 1965 and 1966, beside sad love songs from 1966 on, may suggest a shift in subject over a short span of years. If Sầu biển spread widely in the Navy and Chuyện Người Đan Áo was written for a disc by Kim Loan, then his songs may have reached listeners by more than one route. The singer Kim Loan was the first to sing Chuyện Người Đan Áo before 1975, and Trường Sa has said that her mother came to ask him for a song for her. He wrote the song for Kim Loan to record on a disc for the Thiên Thai label. He began the first notes of Rồi mai tôi đưa em in 1967 after a broken love and finished it two years later, and he says it is the song he likes best. After the song was recorded with the singer Lệ Thu, he says he was deeply moved by her voice and wished to keep writing for it. A song begun in 1967 and finished two years later, beside his wish to keep writing for Lệ Thu, may hint at a lasting bond with her voice. Trường Sa also wrote songs about sailors, including Hành trang giã từ, Chờ em trên bến and Sầu biển. Sầu biển spread widely in the Navy to raise money for the family of Lieutenant Colonel Ngụy Văn Thà, who died in the 1974 battle of Hoàng Sa. After 30 April 1975 he was sent for labor re-education for nine years, and after a failed escape in 1986 he was jailed for two years. He escaped by sea successfully in 1989, stayed at the Pulau Bidong camp in Malaysia and has lived in Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada, since 1991. Songs about sailors, beside years of re-education and a later escape by sea, may point to a life closely tied to the sea.
