She remembers the pivotal moment of discovering her voice as singing in the park with her cousins, and she taught herself piano by googling chords and learning their shapes across the keys. Eager to busk, she quit her job at sixteen, pooled her money, traveled to Byron Bay and bought a camper van. A teenager who left a job to travel and busk in a camper van sounds like someone who made her own opening. While she was out busking, the Australian music lawyer Jackson Walkden-Brown approached her and offered his studio and industry support. Her second single, Dance Monkey, was released on 10 May 2019, and by her recollection it took not much more than 30 minutes, written alone in a dark closet. Bad experiences from working on the street, such as being yelled at, grabbed or having her keyboards knocked over, bled into what she called an upbeat bop. A song that came from being shouted at on the street and turned into something upbeat looks like a way of changing a rough experience into a hook. The single's success instantly ended her career as a busker, and she suffered a great deal of online bullying, press intrusion and pressure to prove herself more than a one-hit wonder. Her rising notoriety, together with her childhood respect for Macklemore, brought the American rapper into her life. She was the most awarded artist at the ARIA Music Awards of 2019, winning four of eight nominations. Four awards at one ceremony and a pressure to prove more than one hit show success arriving with a cost attached. Producers and engineers worked with her in turn as she co-produced her record, yet on the writing she would not compromise or collaborate, and she challenged herself to write the whole album alone. In her own words, she definitely takes pride in writing all her music herself. Writing the whole album alone while working with many producers suggests that the writing was the part she wanted to keep in her own hands.
