Billboard calls TXT a youth-oriented act about pursuing dreams as a team, and the first new group Big Hit Entertainment had formed since the Korean company launched BTS in 2013. Before debuting, all five members spent at least three years training in dancing, singing, rapping and other disciplines under Big Hit, and in a Teen Vogue interview one of them said his training lasted the longest, five years. That member added that he went through growing pains during that time and overcame the hard times only after meeting the other members. Taehyun says that stardom has long been his goal: about ten years earlier, watching SHINee's 2008 debut single Replay made him want to be a singer and set him dreaming of a career in the spotlight. For Yeonjun, a middle school festival showed that he would like to become a performer. A single song and a school festival stage show how different the first sparks could be. The group debuted on March 4, 2019, with the extended play The Dream Chapter: Star. Learning to love himself is where the boy in the lyrics of Crown ends up, after waking with horns on his head, hating himself and withdrawing from others, and meeting a character with wings on their back. Beomgyu, who plays guitar, says they have learned from the staff at their company and are interested in writing their own music. A song about a boy who learns to love himself, and members who want to write their own, show a group moving toward a voice of its own. Across three studio albums and five EPs they have explored many genres, including pop, rock, rap and hip-hop. On November 24, 2021, the group was awarded the 2021 Men of the Year Pop Icon Award by GQ Japan. A range of genres on record and a pop icon award suggest a group that kept to a busy pace.
