Browse piano sheets by Toby Fox on Zen Virtual Piano. Robert F. “Toby” Fox (born October 11, 1991) is an American indie game developer and composer. He is best known for creating and scoring the 2015 role-playing game Undertale, and for Deltarune, a parallel story released in chapters since 2018, with five of its planned seven chapters released as of October 2026. The Undertale soundtrack was entirely composed by Fox with FL Studio. A self-taught musician, he composed most of the tracks with little iteration; the song that plays in the final location before the fight with Asgore, “Undertale,” was the only one to undergo multiple iterations in development. Composing the whole score himself, with little iteration on most tracks, suggests a working style that leaned on first instincts. Under the username Radiation, Fox released EarthBound Halloween Hack in 2008 as part of a ROM hacking competition on Starmen.net and composed the song “Megalovania” for the hack’s soundtrack. Composing “Megalovania” for a hack of the game he had known since he was four suggests that his early composing grew out of a world he already knew well. He was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, the third of four brothers, and discovered the RPG EarthBound at four years old, crediting the game with helping him learn to read. Primarily self-taught, he had taken piano lessons in second grade and began relearning the piano in middle school to play video game music he knew by ear; he also played the trumpet through high school. As a high school senior he began making piano covers of music from the webcomic Homestuck, gaining recognition from its creator Andrew Hussie, and in 2010 he joined its music team, later becoming its production coordinator. Learning game music by ear and then arranging webcomic music suggests a musician who began by listening closely to other people’s work. Joining a webcomic’s music team in 2010 suggests early practice at writing music for a shared project. He is a graduate of Northeastern University, where he studied environmental science. Studying environmental science, alongside a self-taught musical practice, shows a biography that does not run in a straight line from music to games. The music of Deltarune comprises multiple soundtrack albums created and scored by Fox, with guest appearances by Laura Shigihara, Lena Raine, Marcy Nabors, Itoki Hana, Alex Rosetti, Camellia, insaneintherainmusic, Rakuichi and Trevor Alan Gomes. In November 2017 Forbes included him on its 2018 list of 30 Under 30 in Games for his work on Undertale.
