The Lumineers

Browse piano sheets by The Lumineers on Zen Virtual Piano. The Lumineers, an American indie folk band, formed in 2005 in Ramsey, New Jersey, and are now based in Denver, Colorado. Early on, when Schultz and Fraites started writing together and playing gigs around New York City, they went by several names, among them Free Beer, 6Cheek and Wesley Jeremiah. Schultz says he used to write songs on his own, once working in a butcher shop and calling himself to leave a voicemail. Three band names and a voicemail left to himself show how provisional the early years of a band can look. Pekarek had just finished college and meant to become a music teacher, yet she answered a Craigslist ad in which Schultz and Fraites asked for a cellist, and she agreed to join when invited. Schultz and Fraites are the core of the band, and they write back and forth, swapping ideas and song parts over voice memos until the material is ready for the studio. A cellist found through a classified ad and songs passed back and forth as voice memos make a method that seems to rely on exchange. On December 5, 2012, the band was nominated for two Grammy Awards, for Best New Artist and Best Americana Album. The band released its second studio album, Cleopatra, on April 8, 2016. Schultz tells Rolling Stone that he never had expectations of one one-thousandth of what happened with the previous record, and that he is an avid motorcyclist who went on long rides through the Catskill Mountains with the producer, stopping every 20 minutes or so to share lyrical ideas. Long rides broken up by regular stops for lyrics suggest writing done in motion rather than at a desk, and a remark about expectations that never came close to what followed hints at how unplanned the success felt. Cleopatra ends with Patience, the band's first instrumental piece, inspired by the drummer; with no vocal melody or lyrical anchor, the arrangement carries the emotional weight. In October 2018 Neyla Pekarek left the band to concentrate on a solo career. A first instrumental piece placed at the very end of an album might be a quiet place to try something new.
