Teofilo Vargas

Browse piano sheets by Teofilo Vargas on Zen Virtual Piano. In 1894 Vargas Candia dedicated his first composition to Bishop Félix María del Granado, who helped him continue his music studies. His musical training began with a canon named Mordoñez, who gave him lessons in theory and solfège, and in 1879 he was named a choir treble of the Cathedral. A first composition dedicated to a bishop who then helped with his studies shows an early link between his music and the church. In March 1893 he received an appointment as interim chapel master of the Cathedral, a post he later held in full after passing competency exams. In 1894 he organized in his home the first Music School in the city of Cochabamba, where he taught piano, violin, flute and other instruments free of charge. He composed the Himno a Cochabamba in 1901, first titled Himno 14 de Septiembre, which was named the Departmental Hymn of Cochabamba in 1914. A school run from his home and a hymn that later became the departmental one suggest a composer whose work reached far into city life. He taught his specialty at the Escuela de Huérfanos de Guerra, directed the Escuela Musical and organized the Cochabamba Conservatory in 1907, which he directed until 1953. He wrote the music of the Himno a Cochabamba and a profuse body of other works: 22 cuecas and bailecitos, 26 yaravíes, 12 zapateados and pasacalles, overtures, symphonic poems, preludes, patriotic marches and religious music. A conservatory directed for decades and a body of dances, hymns and symphonic works give the picture of a teacher and a composer at once. He was self-taught and one of the first musicians to research the folklore of his country, drawing on native melodies and rhythms when composing. Some streets and avenues of Bolivian cities carry his name, as do several theaters and an annual music prize. Streets, theaters and a prize named for him suggest a lasting place in the cultural memory of Bolivian cities.
