Takeo Watanabe

Browse piano sheets by Takeo Watanabe on Zen Virtual Piano. In period dramas and modern dramas, Takeo Watanabe made heavy use of instruments such as the harpsichord, not used in such dramas until then, in melodies built on a classical foundation. Before composing, he always read the script to grasp the feeling of the work, and at recording sessions he gave advice to singers and players. Reading the script first suggests a composer who treated music as part of the story rather than an add-on. A harpsichord in period and modern dramas points to a taste for classical color in popular settings. Takeo Watanabe was the eldest son of the composer 渡辺浦人, and he graduated from Musashi High School and from the economics department of Musashi University. At 23 he went to Paris to study classical music and graduated from the Schola Cantorum. Afterward he joined Radio Tokyo, now TBS Holdings, working in the direction department on television dramas, until his love of music grew strong enough that he left the company to become a musician. A degree in economics and a job in television before becoming a working musician suggests a route that was far from direct. He wrote the music for anime including Kyojin no Hoshi, Attack No. 1, Tensai Bakabon, Cutie Honey, Majokko Megu-chan, A Dog of Flanders, Candy Candy, Rascal the Raccoon and Mobile Suit Gundam, along with the series Heidi, Girl of the Alps. Songs from these series became hits as well. He used the name 大塩 潤 when handling programs competing in the same time slot; it was his wife's maiden name. Classical study in Paris, beside a long list of anime credits, hints at classical training feeding popular screen music. At the 1998 JASRAC Awards an international prize was awarded for the Attack No. 1 background music, and in 2008 a Merit Award at Tokyo Anime Award 2008 was conferred on him. A set of hina dolls he donated is on display at the gallery Hina no Yakata in Inatori, in the Izu region of Shizuoka, a link that comes from his wife's hometown. He died of kidney failure on June 2, 1989, aged 56, and is buried at Kodaira Cemetery. Prizes presented years after his death suggest that his anime music kept its audience. A doll donation to a gallery in Inatori may offer a glimpse of a personal side apart from his screen work.
