Sleeping At Last

Browse piano sheets by Sleeping At Last on Zen Virtual Piano. Sleeping At Last, the moniker of the Chicago-based singer-songwriter, producer and composer Ryan O’Neal, has released three full-length albums: Ghosts (2003, Interscope Records), Keep No Score (2006) and Storyboards (2009). It has collaborated with Van Dyke Parks, Billy Corgan, David Hodges, Aqualung, Jon Foreman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sarah Brightman, Rita Wilson, Natasha Bedingfield and others. Names from Smashing Pumpkins to Switchfoot to Andrew Lloyd Webber place one project beside very different careers. In 2011 it began the 36-song project Yearbook, which consisted of writing, recording and releasing three new songs every month for one year, offered both as a subscription and as individual EPs. A year organised around a monthly deadline suggests a project that gives its own work a rhythm to follow. In 2013 it began the long-form concept project Atlas, a series of new music to be released over the course of many years: Atlas: I, thirty songs inspired by the origins of the universe, was completed in early 2014, and Atlas: II, twenty-five songs inspired by involuntary human development, was completed in 2019. Ryan scored the feature documentary Many Beautiful Things, which debuted in 2015, composed for the television show Kid President: Declaration of Awesome and scored the short film The Spring for charity: water, which debuted in 2016. A feature documentary, a television show and a short film put the same writer in front of very different kinds of picture. A project measured in years and a set of film scores show a composer who works at both large and short lengths. The Space 2 track list places “Saturn” second, after “Jupiter” and before “Uranus” and “Neptune.” “Saturn” is very much a song about losing someone close and deeply loved, but about the good they left behind in our lives and how to reflect that in the relationships in front of us. Sharon Gerber played the cellos on “Saturn.” A song about loss that features cellos gives a single instrument a close tie to its subject.
