Shirō Sagisu

Browse piano sheets by Shirō Sagisu on Zen Virtual Piano. Shirō Sagisu has said, “My father, USHIO Soji, was a manga artist and a tokusatsu creator. He headed video production company P-Productions.” He has also said, “I was already an animator when I was 10 or 11.” A father in manga and tokusatsu and a son already animating at ten or eleven make a household where pictures and stories came first. He took lessons from the jazz saxophonist Seiichi Nakamura. While still in high school he became a “hakoban no tora”: if a band member did not turn up to a live performance at a club, he would get a phone call and go to the club with his saxophone. A high-school student sent to a club at short notice with a saxophone shows a musician already playing in other people’s bands. He joined the school brass band, where he played organ, flute and saxophone, and decided to engage with jazz as a composer or arranger rather than as a performer. His university big band entered a contest in his second year and won the judges’ award, in a field where only a handful of schools entered with original scores and most asked professional arrangers to write them. A student band winning a judges’ award among schools that mostly asked professional arrangers shows an ensemble holding its own. Once he received an endorsement from Maeda, he felt his goal was achieved and quit university. Leaving university once an endorsement came marks the point at which the work took over from study. The band Square, now T-Square, played as regular performers for one year, which led to the release of their first album, Lucky Summer Lady, in 1978, on which he played keyboards and arranged the music. His debut leader album, EYES – SAGISU Shiro with Somethin’ Special, came out in 1979, when he was 21. A first album as keyboardist and arranger in 1978 and a debut under his own name in 1979 sit one year apart. He ran a club in Paris in the 1990s, buying a furniture store with five floors above ground and one basement and converting it into a club.
