Browse piano sheets by Sheldon Harnick And Jerry Bock on Zen Virtual Piano. Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock were a songwriting partnership in which Harnick wrote the lyrics and Bock composed. They wrote "Sunrise, Sunset", a song from the musical Fiddler on the Roof, in 1964. In 2011 Harnick wrote two versions of the song, suitable for same-sex weddings, with minor word changes. The 1964 writing date and the 2011 wedding versions may point to a song that Harnick revisited well after its first writing. Bock studied the piano from an early age and was soon able to play quite complicated compositions by ear. Bock wrote the musical Big As Life as a student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and it toured the state and ran in Chicago. Bock made his Broadway debut in 1955, when he and Lawrence Holofcener contributed songs to Catch a Star. Bock's early piano study and his 1955 Broadway debut may point to a thread running from the keyboard to the stage. Harnick took an interest in music from an early age and played the violin as a child. He began writing music while a student at Carl Schurz High School. Harnick served in the US Army and then earned a Bachelor of Music degree at the Northwestern University School of Music (1946–1949). Set beside the 1964 song for Fiddler on the Roof, Harnick's early violin playing and his Northwestern music degree may hint at a musical background behind his lyric writing. Bock met Harnick, and PBS calls the partnership they formed arguably the most important musical partnership of the '60s. Their first effort, "The Body Beautiful" (1958), was a failure, but "Fiorello!" (1959) ran for 795 performances. For Fiorello!, Bock and Harnick shared the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and both men won the Tony Award for Best Composer and Lyricist for Fiddler on the Roof. The Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted Harnick in 1972, and in 1990 he received the Johnny Mercer Award, its highest honor. Does the 1964 musical Fiddler on the Roof, beside Harnick's 1972 induction, show honors arriving at more than one point in their careers?
