In a Q&A with American Songwriter, Barnard says he was not brought up with music or Jesus, and that his family moved to Texas when he was in junior high, which is when he became a Christian and started playing guitar. His junior year at Texas A&M brought an invitation to play at an outdoor concert, after he had joined a weekly worship group at church. For the concert he borrowed a real guitar from Shane Everett, a man down the hall who sang covers at bar gigs and was not a Christian then. A borrowed guitar for one outdoor concert looks like a small favor that led to a partnership. Barnard says that he and Everett became buddies, and that within six months music became a full-time job, he quit college and it took off. A friendship begun over a borrowed guitar and a quick move from college to full-time music sketch a very fast start. Barnard says that Everett is not a musician in the sense of playing instruments or writing songs, and that he just sings really well. He says a song starts for him with a bed of chords, and the challenge is then fitting the concept into that bed; he has a vision of where it starts and ends, but as in most writing the middle is the hard part. Chords first and a concept fitted in afterwards, and a middle that stays hard, give an inside view of how one of the two writes. Psalms, released in 2002 under the new name Shane & Shane, was the band's first album; the duo went on to release Carry Away (2003), Upstairs (2004) and Clean (2004). A run of albums that begins with Psalms suggests a first record that may have set the tone for what came after.
