Roy Spaulding Stoughton

Browse piano sheets by Roy Spaulding Stoughton on Zen Virtual Piano. Roy Spaulding Stoughton, also spelled Spalding, was an organist in Worcester, Massachusetts, born there on January 28, 1884, who died in Allston, Massachusetts, on February 1, 1953. His works include the Persian Suite, first published in 1915 in Boston by the White-Smith Music Publishing Co., the Egyptian Suite, first published by the same firm in Boston in 1916, In India, first published by White-Smith in Boston in 1918, and Tales from Arabian Nights, a suite for organ of four movements, first published in 1928. Three works issued by one Boston firm in 1915, 1916 and 1918 suggest a composer who found a steady home for his music there. A suite for organ appearing in 1928, a decade after In India, suggests that the form stayed with him. The Egyptian Suite has four movements: Pyramids (Largo mistico), The Nile (Moderato quasi grotescamente), The Song of the Priestess (Molto moderato) and Rameses II (Allegro marziale). The Persian Suite has three: The Courts of Jamshyd (Alla marcia, G minor), The Garden of Iram (Lento, F minor) and Saki (Allegro scherzando – Lento e molto appassionato, E minor). In India has five: The Grove of Palms (Andante con moto, E major), By the Ganges (Allegretto, G minor), The Dancing Girls of Delhi (Allegro ma non troppo, E minor), Incantation (Molto adagio, F♯ minor) and In the Palace of the Rajah (Maestoso, A minor). Titles drawn from Egypt, Persia, India and the Arabian Nights suggest a composer who looked to the East as a source of colour and story.
