Still under that name the band released two studio albums with compositions influenced by the international rock of the time, and also recorded, under the pseudonym Os Motokas, several LPs of cover versions of hits from that period. A band that played parties and recorded covers under a second name already had two sides before it had the name it now uses. The big change in the group's path came at the turn of the 1980s, when it secured a contract with the label Polygram. Wanting to invest in more original work, the group was renamed Roupa Nova, after a then-unreleased song by Milton Nascimento and Fernando Brant that the sextet recorded that year. With considerable artistic freedom, the band invested in a markedly sophisticated, commercial pop rock sound full of vocal harmonies, at times comparable to the AOR radio format of bands such as Toto. A name taken from someone else's song and a sound full of vocal harmonies suggest a group that built its identity from borrowed and blended parts. Even with its own success, Roupa Nova remained a sought-after studio band on records by MPB stars such as Gal Costa, Zizi Possi and Milton Nascimento, thanks to its professional reputation. The group also recorded commissioned pieces, such as the Tema da Vitória played in Rede Globo's Formula 1 broadcasts and the original theme of the Rock in Rio festival. A band that backed other stars and also recorded commissioned themes for broadcasts seems to have worked in the background as much as in front. The album Roupa Nova em Londres (2009), recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, won the Latin Grammy for Best Contemporary Brazilian Pop Album. Around this time the band released the video for the song Natal Todo Dia. In December 2020 the death of vocalist Paulinho forced the group to change its line-up for the first time in 40 years, and Fábio Nestares, who had sometimes replaced Paulinho on tour, became a permanent member in 2021. A line-up unchanged for 40 years and then a replacement who had already been on the road makes a quiet handover.
