Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Browse piano sheets by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky on Zen Virtual Piano. Tchaikovsky worked with Marius Petipa, with whom he had collaborated on The Sleeping Beauty. Petipa gave him extremely detailed instructions for the composition of each number, down to the tempo and number of bars. By contrast, the opera The Queen of Spades, the third of his Pushkin operas, was written in just 44 days during the winter of 1890 while he stayed in Florence. A partner from The Sleeping Beauty giving instructions detailed down to the bar suggests a partnership with a developed working method. At the beginning of 1885, tired of moving about, he settled in a rented country house near Klin, outside Moscow. There he adopted a regular daily routine that included reading, walking in the forest, composing in the mornings and the afternoons, and playing piano duets with friends in the evenings. Mornings and afternoons given to composing, with walks and evening duets around them, suggest a working life with composing at its centre and friends at its edge. Tchaikovsky showed a clear interest in music from childhood, his earliest musical impressions coming from an orchestrina in the family home, and at four he made his first recorded attempt at composition, a song written with his younger sister Alexandra. At 17 he came under the influence of the Italian singing instructor Luigi Piccioli, the first person to appreciate his musical talents, and developed a lifelong passion for Italian music. An orchestrina in the family home and a lifelong passion for Italian music hint at a taste shaped by early listening. He spent nearly three years at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, studying with Nikolay Zaremba and Anton Rubinstein, and after graduating in December 1865 moved to Moscow to teach music theory. In 1869 he and Balakirev worked on what became his first recognized masterpiece, the fantasy-overture Romeo and Juliet, which The Five wholeheartedly embraced. A fantasy-overture taken up wholeheartedly by The Five hints at how much a circle of fellow musicians could mean to a work’s reception. The Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23, was composed between November 1874 and February 1875 and revised in 1879 and 1888. Swan Lake, the first of his famed trilogy of ballets, premiered on February 20, 1877, but was not a success owing to poor staging and choreography and was soon dropped from the repertoire. Swan Lake’s poor start, set beside its place as the first of a famed trilogy, shows how a work’s fortunes can change. The general public has always responded to his tuneful, open-hearted melodies, impressive harmonies and colorful orchestration, and he was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally. Tuneful melody joined to colorful orchestration offers one way to read how music from Russia reached listeners far from it.
