Post Malone

Post Malone was born Austin Richard Post on 4 July 1995 in Syracuse, New York, and was raised primarily by his father, Rich Post, and his stepmother, Jodie. His father had been a DJ in his youth and introduced him to many genres of music, including hip-hop, country and rock. A father who had been a DJ and a boy who listened to hip-hop, country and rock set up a mix of genres early. According to Malone, his first foray into professional music began when he played guitar in a local metalcore band, and soon afterward he says he transitioned to softer rock as well as hip-hop, before beginning to experiment on FL Studio. At Grapevine High School he shared his first hip-hop mixtape, Young and After Them Riches, with his classmates, and after graduating in 2013 he attended Tarrant County College in Texas but dropped out six months later. A metalcore guitarist who moved on to softer rock, hip-hop and experiments on FL Studio shows an artist changing genre and tools. He moved to Los Angeles at age 18 with aspirations of becoming a music star, and there he, Probst and several other producers and artists formed the music group BLCKVRD and recorded music together, with several members moving into a house in the San Fernando Valley. After hitting one million views within a month of releasing “White Iverson,” he quickly garnered attention from record labels. A shared house and a song that gathered a million views in a month show how a start can come from a crowded room as much as a single hit. His third album, Hollywood’s Bleeding (2019), became his second project to both debut atop the Billboard 200 and receive a Grammy Award nomination for Album of the Year, and it spawned the single “Circles,” which spent 61 weeks on the Hot 100. He has said that Justin Bieber, who brought him out on tour when he was just getting started, gave him a lot of guidance, but that at the end of the day he has to do what he wants to do. Valuing a mentor’s guidance and still insisting on his own decisions captures the balance that a young artist has to find. He received seven nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards, and an eighth, for Best Recording Package, on 20 December.
