Nobuo Uematsu has said of his upbringing, “My father was a teacher, and my mother was a domestic wife…there was no music learning in the home.” He has also said, “I’ve never studied music. I’ve never studied composition or learned an instrument. I simply wanted to make music by myself, so I started playing around with it.” In 1987 he wrote the soundtrack for Final Fantasy. A musician who says he never studied, writing that soundtrack, makes an unlikely-sounding start for a long career. He has explained that the NES made only electronic sounds like “peee,” “booo” and “paaa,” so expressing emotion was tough, and that he would shape a sound such as “pwaoo” by changing the way it faded in and out. Shaping a plain electronic tone through its fade reads like the workaround of someone learning by trying. He has said, “Basically, what I’m trying to do is write good melodies.
