Browse piano sheets by Mykola Leontovych on Zen Virtual Piano. Mykola Leontovych was a Ukrainian composer, conductor and teacher who built much of his music around folk-song texts and melodies. After graduating from the theological seminary in Kamianets-Podilskyi in 1899, he taught in several regions of Ukraine. He continued his musical education through private study in Saint Petersburg and lessons with Boleslav Yavorsky in Kyiv. His earlier choral pieces used strophic arrangements, repeating music across verses. Later, he developed variations more closely connected to the words. The Encyclopedia of Ukraine describes rich harmony and vocal polyphony, including imitation between voices, as important features of his writing. His output also included religious music, a Ukrainian-language liturgy premiered in 1919, and settings of poetry. Oleksander Koshyts and the Ukrainian Republican Kapelle helped carry his works to wider audiences. Shchedryk became especially familiar through the English version Carol of the Bells, authored and premiered by Peter J. Wilhousky in 1936. Leontovych's contribution belongs to the Ukrainian source composition, rather than the later English words.
