Browse piano sheets by Mitski on Zen Virtual Piano. Mitski Miyawaki's mother was Japanese and her father American, and his work as a diplomat took the family all over the world. As a child she drew on her father's extensive Smithsonian Folkways collection and her mother's Japanese pop albums. She has said she studied studio composition at SUNY Purchase, a program that taught music composition and also how to work in studios. A degree that paired composing with studio work sets out the two halves of the craft she would go on to practice, writing the song and shaping how it sounds. She self-released Lush as her debut studio album through Bandcamp on January 31, 2012. She moved to Brooklyn after graduating, and with no orchestra at her disposal any more, she taught herself the guitar. Taught-herself guitar after the orchestra was gone makes these years read as a series of restarts, each one building on the last. In an interview she said her writing process is a lot of editing, and that many lines in her lyrics are things she writes down as notes throughout the day. The third single from her seventh studio album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, was My Love Mine All Mine, released on September 15, 2023. Her lyrics ask the Moon to take her love when she dies and shine it back down to Earth, over country-influenced piano and pedal steel guitar. Lines gathered as daily notes, then edited into a song that speaks to the Moon, show how small observations can end up as a single image. The 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once featured This Is a Life, which she co-composed with Son Lux and which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. A song written for a film puts the album-maker in a different frame, with a nomination to mark it, and it adds one more way in which her work travels.
