Manaka Kataoka has had a hand in music composition for Animal Crossing: City Folk, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Wii Fit, and AnimalCrossingWorld reported that she was leading the soundtrack for the Zelda title Breath of the Wild. Kataoka recalls that when she joined the team, the first thing she did was try playing the game, which was still a little un-moderated, and she very quickly got a game over; because of that she had the impression it was really difficult. A composer whose first act on joining a team was to play a game, and who met a game over almost at once, suggests someone who came to the music through the experience of playing. Kataoka explained that the setting is the true protagonist of the game: from the vast natural beauty to the ruthless and rough areas, she felt that the map is the main appeal. Calling the map the true protagonist places the composer’s task in the land itself. She also realised the importance of reflecting Link’s emotions and journey, and added the break in the main theme to relate to Link’s 100-year sleep, with the music starting again to reflect Link’s first breath when he awakens. A pause built into a theme can make the music’s return feel like an awakening of its own. To compose a theme that can do so much, Kataoka decided to use traditional instruments that may not always be used in a typical modern orchestra, feeling that the shinobue and the erhu would be perfect to add to the history of the land. A shinobue and an erhu chosen for the history of the land suggest a search for sounds that carry history of their own. She agrees with her colleague Wakai that the music could push a certain feeling onto players, and she thinks that sticking with background music that allows them to hear the environmental noise and footsteps can have a beneficial effect.
