Lin-Manuel Miranda

Browse piano sheets by Lin-Manuel Miranda on Zen Virtual Piano. Miranda's parents are Luz Towns-Miranda, a clinical psychologist, and Luis Miranda Jr., a political consultant; he was born in New York City on January 16, 1980. Every year in his childhood and teens, he spent at least a month with his grandparents in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. In 1999, his sophomore year of college at Wesleyan University, he wrote the earliest draft of In the Heights, his first Broadway musical. A month each year in Puerto Rico and a college draft of a Broadway show may be early signs of the places and stories his work would return to. In those years he taught English at his old high school, wrote a column and restaurant reviews for the Manhattan Times, and composed commercial music. A teacher, columnist and commercial composer while a musical waited in revision shows several jobs held in parallel. In the film it is performed by Auliʻi Cravalho in her role as the title character; Miranda wrote How Far I'll Go, and Mark Mancina added music and production on its reprise. Miranda went method to write a song more compelling than More: by his own account, he shut himself in his childhood bedroom at his parents' home for a whole weekend to push his mind back to age 16, Moana's age. Locking himself in an old bedroom to return to being sixteen is a reminder that the craft of a song can include setting a scene for the writer. The Pulitzer Prize went to Hamilton, which also received a record 16 Tony nominations and won 11, among them Miranda's first win, for Best Book of a Musical. He received the Kennedy Center Honor in 2018, and in 2023 he wrote additional lyrics for the Broadway musical New York, New York. Puerto Rico has had his political backing: in 2016 he met with politicians to speak out for debt relief, and in 2017, after Hurricane Maria, he raised funds for rescue efforts and disaster relief. Awards on one side and fundraising for Puerto Rico on the other give the account two ways of measuring what the work has done.
