Lewis Capaldi

Browse piano sheets by Lewis Capaldi on Zen Virtual Piano. As a child, Capaldi's family made road trips of fifteen hours or more in a minivan from Glasgow to France, playing Queen, Elvis Presley and Fleetwood Mac along the way. At an RV park stop during one trip, a cabaret band opened its set to anyone, and Capaldi, then four, seized the chance. He was born in Glasgow in 1996 with Scottish, Irish and Italian roots; the actor Peter Capaldi, a second cousin once removed on his father's side, appeared in the Someone You Loved video. A four-year-old stepping up at an open mic night in a car park suggests how early the urge to perform arrived, and how readily he took any stage that was offered. A teacher recalls that his talent came to the front in the school talent contest, when a massive voice came out of a very small first-year boy. He started writing his own music at nine and began regularly performing at Scottish pubs at eleven. His manager, Ryan Walter, first found him on SoundCloud in 2015: within ten seconds, Walter says, he knew he had to get in touch. A school contest, small pub crowds and a manager's discovery on SoundCloud suggest a gradual rise through every kind of room, with each step building on the last. Music managers noticed his homemade sound when he was seventeen, and his first single, in March 2017, brought millions of Spotify streams and a record deal. One last four-hour piano session looked fruitless until its final five minutes, which gave him the melody of Someone You Loved. The song only clicked when its producers, TMS, encouraged him to write about loss more generally, ending the writer's block that had kept it on the shelf for months. A song born in the last five minutes of a failed session suggests that a song can arrive when he had nearly stopped trying, and that a collaborator's nudge mattered as much as the melody. He says he did not want to write about the same break-up but about the feeling of losing someone in general, so that people could make their own story of it, though he also says it is actually about his grandmother, who died a few years earlier. At the 2020 Brit Awards he won best new artist and best song, the latter for Someone You Loved, which had held No. 1 for seven weeks in spring 2019. Per the BBC, his health problems began in the pandemic, when he returned home during the Covid lockdown planning to begin work on a second album. A song about a grandmother that listeners were invited to make their own hints at an artist whose work relies on emotional honesty.
