Laufey

Browse piano sheets by Laufey on Zen Virtual Piano. On the day before Berklee’s campus shut because of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, Laufey recorded her first song, “Street by Street.” Berklee describes it as an intimate, confessional song sung in a smoky vocal timbre and accompanied by minimalist jazz guitar. A month of trying, then a recording on the last day before a campus closed, makes a slow arrival coincide with a sudden closing. She has said, “It’s the first song that I wrote that truly felt like something that I wanted to do. I had been trying to write for a month, and that was the first song where something just clicked.” Laufey Lín Jónsdóttir is the daughter of a Chinese mother and an Icelandic father and grew up in Reykjavik and Washington, D.C.; her mother is a world-class violinist and her grandfather taught the instrument in China. She was studying violin and piano at a very young age and by 15 was playing cello solos with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and appearing on Iceland Got Talent, where she finished second. Cello solos with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and a place on a talent show at 15 show a teenager moving between concert and entertainment stages. Trained as a classical musician, she has long loved jazz singers such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Chet Baker and has a fondness for the Great American Songbook, and she received a Presidential Scholarship to attend Berklee. Classical training on one side and jazz singers on the other give her music two obvious sources to draw on. She has said, “My whole goal as a musician is to bring these older styles of music to a new audience and frame it as something that’s new and relevant and cool.” She posts a new song or an arrangement of a jazz standard on TikTok, Instagram or YouTube once she has written it or thought of an arrangement, and the feedback tells her whether to take it further and record it. Posting promptly and using audience feedback before deciding whether to record makes the audience part of the creative process. She has said, “I find it easier to write alone, but I think my music is a lot better when I collaborate. Music to me, is meant for collaboration.” A writer who finds it easier alone but better with others describes a process in which collaboration sits close to the centre. She has said that “Magnolia” is her grandmother’s favorite flower and also a word her father loves.
