Kenji Yamamoto

Browse piano sheets by Kenji Yamamoto on Zen Virtual Piano. Born on April 25, 1964, Yamamoto works for Nintendo as a Japanese video game musician; many Metroid titles carry his music, mainly Super Metroid and the Metroid Prime trilogy. He frequently collaborates with fellow composers Minako Hamano and Masaru Tajima, and as a music director at Nintendo he oversees the audio of several of its games. His music uses heavy drums, piano, voiced chants, clangs of pipes and electric guitar. His role overseeing audio at Nintendo may sit alongside a sound palette of voiced chants and clangs of pipes that reaches beyond a single instrument. For Metroid Prime he was asked to compose the music in order to reinforce the series' continuity. He also did the music for Metroid: Samus Returns, a reimagining of the second Metroid game; that original game was released for Game Boy. Being asked to reinforce the series' continuity may suggest that his role in Metroid extended to the sound of the series as a whole. Most of the Donkey Kong Country Returns soundtrack came from Yamamoto, with further contributions from Minako Hamano, Masaru Tajima, Shinji Ushiroda and Daisuke Matsuoka. He composed new material to fit the atmosphere of Returns, and because the levels were tweaked constantly he sometimes had to recompose his tracks. Writing most of the soundtrack while the levels kept changing may suggest that his music had to stay adaptable while the game was being built.
