The Katsuo Ohno Band (大野克夫バンド) is led by the composer Katsuo Ohno, who grew up in an old kimono shop in Kyoto as the youngest of five siblings. An old Kyoto kimono shop is a long way from the television studios where his music would be heard, and the distance gives the life its range. Ohno played in jazz bands from his high-school years, and after an ardent scouting approach from Akitomo Tanabe, leader of The Spiders, he moved to Tokyo and joined the group in 1962, ahead of the later front members. As a composer he is credited with Kenji Sawada's Katte ni Shiyagare, which won the 1977 Record Award among other prizes, and with the music for the dramas Taiyō ni Hoero! and Kizudarake no Tenshi. A route from a Kyoto jazz band through The Spiders and PYG to television drama music reads as a sequence of rooms rather than one stage. In 1980, after the Takayuki Inoue band broke up, the music of Taiyō ni Hoero! passed from Ohno's personal band Freeways to the Katsuo Ohno Band, with Ohno steering the writing, arranging and playing. The same band has kept playing the background music of the TV anime Detective Conan since 1996, and the Detective Conan Main Theme was released as a CD single on January 25, 1996. Ohno says that when he reads the story he hears the sound in his head and makes it exactly that, that the Conan work began with a request to make it in the feel of Taiyō ni Hoero!, and that children, who think Conan is the original, say rerun episodes of Taiyō ni Hoero! are copying Conan. Between a police drama and a children's detective series runs a thread of style, and Ohno's remark about the reruns draws attention to it. On December 7, 2023, he was honored as a Kyoto City Cultural Meritorious Person for his long contribution to raising the culture of Kyoto. Being honored by the city where he grew up gives a career that took him to Tokyo and television the look of a circle closing.
