In an El País interview she describes a childhood that no longer exists and says she comes from the time when children still played at making swamp fritters. During her music studies at the University of Antioquia she sang backup for other artists, among them Reykon, with whom she recorded Tu Juguete (2011) and 301 (2012). A student who sang backup during her music studies was already doing music work while still at university. She says she has been making music since 2006, and she obtained her first record contract with Flamingo Records of Colombia and Diamond Music of Puerto Rico, choosing Karol G as her artistic name. Her career was not progressing fast enough in South America, so in 2014 she moved to New York, where she worked and stayed with her aunt. Leaving Medellín for New York because the pace at home felt too slow looks like a decision made out of impatience. Her album Ocean, released in May 2019, marked a stylistic departure from Unstoppable, with a more relaxed and less pop sound and reggaetón influences. The album was officially released on May 3, 2019, alongside its sixth single of the same name. The 66th annual ceremony in early 2024 brought her first Grammy Award, in the newly created Música Urbana Album category. A move from a pop sound toward a relaxed one on Ocean, and a Grammy for an urban album category five years later, might be read as parts of the same turn. In the El País interview she says she has a lot of discipline and has disciplined her talent, and that she has worked very hard to achieve what she has. She also says she would not have wanted to be an astronaut; she would have wanted to be a professional motocross racer, something she has loved since she was a kid. A singer who names motocross as her other dream gives the account a speed that has nothing to do with the studio.
