Joy Division

Browse piano sheets by Joy Division on Zen Virtual Piano. Joy Division's debut album was recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport in April 1979, and the music of its opening track, Disorder, came out of their usual method of jamming through long practice sessions. The track had been played live several times before its studio recording. A disagreement arose early in the production over how the album should sound, between the band's wish for the heavy guitar attack of their live shows and a more pared back, spectral sound created by stripping back and isolating each instrument. A track already played live, set beside the band's heavy guitar attack, hints at live performance being central to how the band sounded. According to Reynolds, Steve Morris's drums seemed to circle the rim of a crater, Peter Hook's bass carried the melody, and Bernard Sumner's guitar left gaps rather than piling on riffs. Curtis was the band's sole lyricist and usually wrote his words in a notebook, separately from the music that would eventually grow around them. A bass that carries the tune and a guitar that leaves gaps suggest a sound built as much on space between the notes as on the notes themselves. During the drive home from the Hope and Anchor gig in London, Curtis suffered his first recognized severe epileptic seizure and went into the hospital. He died by suicide in May 1980, aged 23, on the eve of what would have been the band's first North American tour. After his death the three remaining members, joined by keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, continued as New Order, with Sumner taking over as vocalist. In 2005 both New Order and Joy Division were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. A joint 2005 induction for New Order and Joy Division hints at the two names being treated as one story, even though the lineup changed.
