Browse piano sheets by Journey on Zen Virtual Piano. Journey is a rock band whose founding members gathered in San Francisco in 1973, with former Santana manager Herbie Herbert overseeing them. Following a single show in Hawaii, Journey rapidly gave up the "backup group" concept, and its sound turned toward a distinctive jazz fusion style. Journey was originally a progressive rock band, and AllMusic wrote that by 1978 they had cemented a reputation as "one of America's most beloved (and sometimes hated) commercial rock/pop bands." That was the year they embraced pop arrangements on their fourth album, Infinity. The Hawaii show that ended the "backup group" concept and the pop arrangements on Infinity may point to a band whose sound shifted more than once. Journey hired Steve Perry as their new lead singer on October 10, 1977, at a time when sales had not improved and Columbia Records was on the verge of dropping the band. Band member Rolie suggested pianist Jonathan Cain of The Babys as his permanent replacement. Cain's synthesizers took the place of Rolie's organ, and Cain became the new member of the band. Late in 1980, Journey, now with Cain on keyboards, went into Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. Their seventh studio album, Escape, followed in July 1981. Escape became their most successful album, charting at number one in the United States. Columbia Records being on the verge of dropping Journey and Escape charting at number one may hint at how far the band's fortunes moved. Following the end of a tour, tensions between Steve Perry, the band, and manager Herbie Herbert were at an all-time high. Journey went into a hiatus in 1987 after the conclusion of their Raised on Radio tour. Filipino singer Arnel Pineda, of the cover band The Zoo, was found by Neal Schon while covering "Faithfully". Impressed, Schon contacted Pineda and set up two days of auditions. Journey named Pineda the official lead vocalist on December 5, 2007. The 1987 hiatus and Pineda's naming as lead vocalist in 2007 may suggest a band that carried on through changes in its lineup. In 2005, Neal Schon and Journey received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Billboard Magazine recognized them with the Legend Of Live Award at the 2011 Billboard Touring Conference. Neal Schon was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of Journey. The Hollywood Walk of Fame Star in 2005 and the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction may point to recognition for the band that came from more than one institution.
