Johnny Wright

Browse piano sheets by Johnny Wright on Zen Virtual Piano. Wright was born into a farming family in the small town of Mount Juliet, east of Nashville. He recalled the arrival of WSM on the air in 1925 and listened to the first broadcast by Uncle Jimmy Thompson, which grew into the Grand Ole Opry. In his early twenties he sang on WSIX, a Nashville radio station, together with his sister Louise Wright and his new wife Muriel Deason, to whom he had proposed the stage name Kitty Wells, taken from an old song title. A boy who heard an early radio broadcast, and a wife who took a stage name from an old song, set the story in the world of radio from the start. In 1938 he met Jack Anglin, who sang in a trio alongside his brothers Jim and Red and soon married Louise Wright. They worked as a tight group for five years across south-eastern radio stations, until Anglin was drafted in 1943. In 1951 Johnnie & Jack had chart success with Poison Love and Cryin' Heart Blues, whose rumba rhythm was emphasised by maracas. Maracas on a country record say something about how willing the duo was to try a sound from outside the usual one. In 1954 Johnnie & Jack chose to adapt R&B chart songs, beginning with I Get So Lonely by the Four Knights, which reached No. 1 on the country chart, and followed with Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight by the Spaniels. A misprint on a record led him to respell his name from Johnnie, and his solo career opened with the No. 1 hit Hello Vietnam, which later appeared in the 1987 movie Full Metal Jacket. Written by Tom T. Hall, the single spent twenty weeks in the Billboard country charts, three of them at No. 1. Taking songs from another chart and later a solo hit show a performer who looked outside his own lane more than once. The Tennessee Mountain Boys remained his band for performing and recording, and he and Kitty appeared together regularly, with a TV show of their own in the 1970s. They came out of several years of retirement in 1992, joined by their son Bobby, and the farewell concert that he and Kitty gave in Nashville was in 2000. A TV show, a return after retirement and a farewell concert together make the partnership with Kitty Wells read as the long thread of his life.
