John Stromberg

Browse piano sheets by John Stromberg on Zen Virtual Piano. Milton, Prince Edward Island, is where John Stromberg was born John Alexander Stramberg. His father arranged music and was affiliated with Galbraith's Band, a Canadian regimental band. In Nova Scotia he directed three groups, the River John Brass Band, the Pictou Choral Society and the Pictou Concert Band, having studied music first under his father and a music professor. A boy whose father arranged music went on to direct brass bands and choirs, which gives his New York years a base in several kinds of ensemble. In 1895 in New York, while working as an arranger for the music publisher House of Witmark, he wrote his first hit, My Best Girl's a Corker. His hiring came in 1896, as composer and conductor for the comedy duo Weber and Fields and their burlesque and variety shows, staged at the Weber and Fields Music Hall in New York City. Kiss Me, Honey, Do reached number one in 1899 and is among his best-known compositions, along with Ma Blushin' Rosie and Come Down Ma Evenin' Star. With a first hit in 1895, a Music Hall post in 1896 and a chart-topper in 1899, the 1890s make the busiest stretch in this account, each step following closely on the last. For several years he had suffered severely from debilitating, probably rheumatoid, arthritis, and that the failure of his Stromberg Park real-estate investment in Freeport, Long Island, added heavily to his troubles. The completed manuscript of the ballad Come Down Ma Evenin' Star was found in his coat pocket after he consumed a fatal dose of insecticide, days before the first rehearsal. That the finished manuscript was found with him leaves one work complete at a hard moment.
