Alfred and Julia Lennon had one child, John, who was born on 9 October 1940 at Liverpool Maternity Hospital. In 1956 Julia bought Lennon his first guitar, an inexpensive Gallotone Champion acoustic. Lennon's first guitar in 1956 and the founding of the Quarrymen that September may point to a year with two musical beginnings. Lennon's biological mother had taught him to play the banjo. Sean Lennon, Lennon's only child with Ono, was born on 9 October 1975. After Sean's birth Lennon largely stepped away from the music industry. He became a househusband, and he later said that he "baked bread" and "looked after the baby." Lennon was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1997.
