For nearly two years he sat in the company studio writing songs late into the night, and he also took the opportunity to learn recording and sound mixing. Nights in a studio spent writing, alongside learning to record and mix, made a double apprenticeship for a young songwriter. He worked with the lyricist Vincent Fang, who wrote more than half the lyrics on Chou’s albums, and Chou infused many of his melodies and lyrics with a strong traditional Chinese feeling. His new music style became known as Chou Style. His career launched with the 2000 release of his debut album, Jay. A lyricist who wrote more than half the lyrics on his albums, and a style known as Chou Style, make the partnership central to the sound. In March 2007 Chou and his friends founded a record company, JVR Music, and by running it he hoped to help other young talents realize their music dreams. At the end of 2023 he curated and hosted an exhibition in Shanghai called Art Encounters with Jay, featuring the works of more than 20 contemporary artists, including Gerhard Richter, Mark Bradford and José Parlá. A label meant for young talents and an exhibition of other artists’ work can be read as interests that reach beyond his own recordings.
