Huey Lewis, the namesake of Huey Lewis & The News, was born in New York City and moved to Marin County, California, at the age of four. Lewis was 13 when he headed east to a New Jersey boarding school, and it was there that the harmonica first became his instrument. Once he had graduated, he spent a year hitch-hiking around western Europe with it. He then spent a year and a half at Cornell University, played in bands there, and moved back to California, where he joined the country-rock band Clover. Hitch-hiking around western Europe with a harmonica, beside Clover's albums popular in London, may hint at Europe turning up twice in Lewis's story. A childhood move to Marin County, beside a later jam night at a club there, may point to a lasting tie between Lewis and that area. For six years Clover worked three or four sets a night on five or more nights a week, until Phonogram Records in London signed the band. Its two albums for Fantasy were ignored in America but became popular in London's pub-rock scene. Albums ignored in America yet popular in London, beside a deal signed in London, may suggest that the city played a part in Clover's story. By 1977 Clover was no more. Lewis then organized Monday Night Live, a jam session and variety show held at Uncle Charlie's, a local club in Marin County. Six years of nightly sets with Clover, beside a weekly show at a local club, may suggest a band built on live playing. Lewis formed a band called American Express, and their first album, Huey Lewis And The News, came out in 1980. Louder writes that Huey Lewis & The News were a bar band who put new technology to work behind a classic, bluesy R&B sound. Lewis says of that sound: "It was the old and the new all at once." For the album Sports the band produced the record themselves, and Lewis says they wanted to make those commercial choices on their own. A bar-band background, beside a self-produced album, may hint at a group that kept control of its own sound. The Power of Love, written for the film Back to the Future, was nominated for an Academy Award. Zemeckis liked the song so much that he made it the tune Marty McFly's school band plays at an audition. Lewis himself has a cameo as a teacher who rejects the band for being too loud. In 1988 the album Small World was a deliberate shift in direction, and Louder says critics slammed it for moving away from the band's roots. A song written for a film, beside a cameo in that film, may point to a close tie between Lewis and the project.
