Hiroyuki Sawano was born on 12 September 1980 in Tokyo and is a composer, arranger, lyricist, pianist and music producer best known for his work on anime series, video games, television dramas and films. He has said, āAs a young student, my first musical influence was the singer Aska. I was fascinated with his songs, and at that point I started to dream vaguely about a career in music. At middle school I started to listen to TM Network, and I particularly liked the band leader, Tetsuya Komuro.ā Fandom at school and a career in sound meet in his story as a straight line from listener to maker. A fanās first singer and a band leader he noticed at middle school gave him two different pictures of what a music career might be. After music college he started pitching himself for musical projects while absorbing influences from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Joe Hisaishi and Yoko Kanno, and from international film composers such as Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman. His career as a musician started in 2004, initially writing songs for other artists, and he took charge of his first soundtrack work in 2006. Writing songs for other artists before turning to soundtracks gave his career two distinct stages. His close relationship with animation started with the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn series, which established his credentials and led to other high-profile anime projects including Attack on Titan and Guilty Crown. Describing his approach to film scoring, he says, āBasically, I set up a meeting and have a team to come up with a music menu, then discuss the direction with the director. According to this menu, I start composing in the DTM (Desktop Music) environment, finish up the main song representing the whole soundtrack, and then construct the other parts. In some cases I start by creating rhythm parts or a melody.ā A music menu discussed with a director and a main song as the centrepiece make his method resemble a plan drawn before the building starts, though he sometimes begins with a rhythm or a melody. A vocal-focused project, SawanoHiroyuki[nZk], began in the spring of 2014, and as a producer he has worked with SennaRin and NAQT VANE, a group he announced in September 2022 whose debut single āBreak Freeā was released on 16 September 2022. Splitting his output between soundtracks and a vocal project suggests two sets of priorities, one serving a picture and one serving a voice. He has said, āThe most essential thing is whether you like the music Iām producing, and that is the music you have to reach out with,ā and that this is something he ended up with when making the second nZk album, 2V-ALK. A composer who treats the music he produces as the thing to reach out with puts the work itself at the centre of his approach.
