Hajime Wakai

Browse piano sheets by Hajime Wakai on Zen Virtual Piano. Born on July 5, 1973, in Kyoto, Wakai graduated from the Osaka College of Music in spring 1996 and then joined Nintendo EAD. On Star Fox 64 he first worked alongside Koji Kondo, and there he composed all of the planetary and battle themes. A first assignment that covers every planet and every battle in one game gives an early view of the range of settings he was asked to cover. He then worked on other Nintendo 64 titles, such as the Pokémon Stadium series. For the first Pikmin game, on the GameCube, he was the only composer, and he also supplied the voices of the Pikmin themselves. Next came most of the battle themes for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, which stood out because they responded to what Toon Link was doing on screen as he fought. Composing a game's score and also giving voice to its creatures may be a sign of how closely he could shape a game's sound. Following several other titles, he served as sound director for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and he contributed to its soundtrack too. That game broke from the series' traditional musical style, putting ambient music and sound effects forward to suit its open-air concept. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom brought him back to the role of sound director, after an appointment as sound engineer for the entire Zelda series. A move from battle themes that follow a character's swings to ambient music in an open world appears to follow the direction of the games themselves.
