Wired describes Claire Boucher as the given name of a Vancouver kid obsessed with video games, and Grimes as the self-invented, scrappy DIY musician who weaves science fiction into her work. The Guardian reports that she attended a school that specialised in creative subjects but studied art and avoided music completely. Her music-making came about through Lab Synthèse, a Montreal loft that became a live music venue until police shut it down in November 2009, giving rise to Arbutus Records, which is as much an arts collective as a label. A school for creative subjects that she used for art, and a Montreal loft venue that helped lead her into music, suggest a path into music built from friends and places rather than lessons. She got a friend to show her how to use Garageband so she could start recording herself, and out of those sessions came her 2010 Dune-referencing cassette-only debut, Geidi Primes, released via Arbutus Records. Her first two albums, Geidi Primes and Halfaxa, were made available for free online in 2010, after friends persuaded her to put out her music. A debut made with software a friend showed her, and shared online for free, suggests an artist who worked in the open from the start. Visions was technically her third album and the first released on 4AD, and she locked herself in her bedroom, blacked out the windows and did not leave for three weeks. She told MusicRadar that by Visions she understood songwriting and sound design to be two different things, and that she does a lot of layering, using synthetic claps with a couple of layers of real claps on top. Art Angels, by contrast, was made under controlled and leisurely conditions; she said she made tons and tons of music and handpicked what she liked. Between a bedroom shut away for three weeks and a calm, unhurried process, her working conditions seem to change with each record instead of following one fixed routine. Wired quotes her saying she has always been more of a producer and engineer, is not a naturally great singer and is pretty shy, and that at the beginning she tried to find a singer or front person. She told the Guardian that the whole purpose of Grimes is that it is genreless, and that constantly putting a genre label on it makes no sense. Time called her a Canadian art-pop eminence in its discussion of We Appreciate Power, a single made with frequent collaborator HANA. Perhaps a producer who calls herself shy and her project genreless offers two self-descriptions, one about the person and one about the music.
