By self-teaching he acquired great facility in composing and in playing such diverse instruments as the violin, recorder, oboe, viola da gamba, chalumeau and clavier. A list that spans strings, winds and keyboard suggests an ear trained across the whole range of sound rather than one family of instruments. A master of the principal styles of his time, German, Italian and French, he could write with ease and fluency in any of them and often absorbed influences of Polish and English music. By pursuing exclusive publication rights for his works, he set one of the most important early precedents for regarding music as the intellectual property of the composer. Writing in three national styles while pursuing exclusive rights to his works suggests a composer with an eye on his own market. He reorganized the collegium musicum, the student musical society, into an efficient amateur orchestra that gave public concerts, then a novelty, and became director of the Leipzig Opera. Public concerts by an amateur orchestra, a novelty at the time, suggest a musician who thought of a wider audience than the court. His next positions were at two princely courts, first as kapellmeister in Sorau, now Żary, Poland (1705–08). In 1729 he refused a call to organize a German orchestra at the Russian court, and in 1722 he had declined an offer from the municipal authorities in Leipzig to succeed Kuhnau as organist. Declining a call to Russia and an offer of the succession in Leipzig shows how many doors his reputation opened. A friend of Bach and Handel, he was godfather to Bach’s son Carl Philipp Emanuel, who succeeded him as musical director of Hamburg after Telemann’s death at the age of 86. He took up theoretical studies, as well as hobbies such as gardening and cultivating exotic plants, something of a fad in Hamburg at that time and a hobby shared by Handel. A hobby shared with Handel, a friendship with Bach and a godson who inherited his post tie him into a small network of fellow musicians.
