Frank H. Grey

Browse piano sheets by Frank H. Grey on Zen Virtual Piano. Frank H. Grey composed the music for the 1914 Broadway production of Bringing Up Father, produced by Gus Hill, with lyrics by Elven E. Hedges, a libretto by John P. Mulgrew and Thomas Swift, choreography by Edward Hutchinson and direction by Frank Tannehill, Jr. A stage show built on the strip, with its music in Grey’s hands, places him where popular theater met popular print. Hill produced many more theatrical versions of the strip that toured the country. As of September 2019, 19 of Grey’s works had been identified as published between 1907 and 1939. Of ragtime interest is “The Du Pont Tango” (1914), published by Jerome H. Remick & Co. in New York and Detroit. His songs include “Be a True American” (1917), with words by J. Will Callahan, performed by Anna Held; “Think Love of Me” (1918), performed by Barbara Maurel, Gladys Rice and Reinald Werrenrath; “In the Afterglow” (1919), with words by J. Will Callahan, performed by Elsie West Baker and Marie Morrisey; and “Mother of My Heart” (1921), with words by C. S. Montanye, performed by Frances Davis Alda and Jerome Uhl. Different singers for each song, from 1917 to 1921, suggest music that passed easily from performer to performer. In 1922 Leo Feist, Inc., of New York published “Lover’s Lane With You” and “Smile and Forget,” the latter on the subjects of roses, mothers and children, advice, time and optimism. Mothers appear in the title of “Mother of My Heart” and in the subjects of “Smile and Forget,” which hints at a taste for sentimental themes.
