Browse piano sheets by Felix Bernard on Zen Virtual Piano. Felix William Bernard was born in New York City on 28 April 1897 and died in Los Angeles, California, on 20 October 1944. He was an American conductor, pianist and composer of popular music whose writing credits include Winter Wonderland, with the lyricist Richard Bernhard Smith, and Dardanella. A professional pianist from childhood, he had his early musical studies with his father, and was educated at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He wrote professional one-act musical comedies for vaudeville and toured the United States with the Orpheum and Keith Vaudeville Circuits, and also abroad. Travelling the Orpheum and Keith circuits, and abroad, can be read as a working life spent on the road as well as at the piano. He worked as a pianist for dance orchestras and music publishers before forming his own band, and he had his own radio show, which he produced. Best known as a composer, he found success writing special musical material for artists such as Al Jolson, Nora Bayes, Eddie Cantor, Marilyn Miller and Sophie Tucker. Writing special material for such a range of stars can be read as a talent for fitting music to a range of different performers. In 1934 Bernard joined ASCAP, where his chief collaborators were Sam Coslow, L. Wolfe Gilbert, Richard Bernhard Smith and Johnny Black. His other compositions include The Whistlin’ Cowboy, You Opened My Eyes, Cutest Kid in Town, “Jane” and “Tom Thumb and Tiny Teens”. Titles such as The Whistlin’ Cowboy and Cutest Kid in Town reach across quite different subjects.
